A card game with an isometric view. In Death Howl we play as a huntress travelling through the nordic Stone Age kingdom and hoping to resurrect her dead son. The game allows us to craft our own cards and compose our own deck. We can then participate in turn-based battles with both standard enemies & bosses.
Death Howl is a card game where a tale of sorrow is combined with tactical battles. The development of this game was done by the independent Danish team The Outer Zone (creators of Mind Scanners), while its release was handled by the Polish company 11 bit studios.
The action of Death Howl takes place in a Nordic kingdom inspired by the Stone Age. The main character of the story told here is Ro, a huntress from a small tribe. The protagonist embarks on a journey to the land of spirits to find a way to resurrect her deceased son.
The story focuses on such themes as love, loss, sadness, and acceptance. As we progress, we not only learn more parts of the story, but also find out more about the land of spirits.
In Death Howl we watch events in an isometric view. The game provides us with an open world consisting of gloomy regions like the Forest of Howling Shadows or Meadows of Illusions. In each of these locations, we gather ingredients that we use to produce cards. In addition to this, along the way we find shamanic totems that allow us to improve our deck.
During the game we often come face to face with opponents. Skirmishes with hostile creatures take place in turn-based mode, on arenas covered with a grid of square fields. We have to deal with both standard enemies and powerful bosses.
We play cards corresponding to specific close and long-range attacks, as well as those related to various offensive and defensive skills. The icing on the cake are the totems, which further increase our combat potential.
The graphic design of Death Howl was made in pixel art technique.

Duuro Magazine: by Krist Duro
I respect Death Howl more than I enjoyed it. It has a clear creative identity, strong art direction, and a combat system that will click with players who enjoy hard, grind-forward strategy with heavy resource tension. For me, it was mostly frustration. I came in expecting a deckbuilder that would scratch a certain itch, and instead found a very demanding tactical game where RNG and attrition often drowned out the fun. I do not hate Death Howl, and I do not think it is a bad game. I think it is a very specific game that asks for a lot, very early, and gives back in ways that did not work for me.
Outrun Gaming: 8 / 10 by Mikey Yaden
Death Howl is a challenging and rewarding adventure with a solid deckbuilding experience for players brave enough to stick it out. Ro’s gripping story of grief shines despite being part of an oversaturated genre, and the game’s deep strategy and unforgiving Soulslike elements make it feel truly brand-new.
Nindie Spotlight: 7.1 / 10 by Justin Nation
An attractive and challenging deckbuilder featuring interesting strategic challenges, but that also feel very grindy and overly brutal
